HaSeul (Hangul: 하슬)[4] is a South Korean singer. She is the third revealed member of LOONA and a member of its first sub-unit, LOONA 1/3. She is also a member of ARTMS.

She was born as Cho Ha-seul (Hangul: 조하슬) on August 18, 1997, in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, South Korea.[5]

She debuted on December 8, 2016 as a member and subsequently released her solo single album HaSeul on December 15, 2016.

History

Early life (1997–2016)

HaSeul was born in Suncheon, South Korea, on August 18, 1997. She is the oldest sibling in her family, with one younger brother born in 2002.[6]

In elementary school, HaSeul participated in a youth choir which ignited her love of singing.[7] Furthermore, she started studying opera during elementary.[8] As a student, HaSeul studied abroad in Sydney, Australia for a month.[9] In 2013, she moved to Colorado, USA, to live with her aunt and went to school for another year under the English name Jane Cho. At first, HaSeul had trouble with her limited English and passed her time on weekends by spending up to ten hours a day alone in a local mall. She focused on perfecting her English pronunciation so that others would think she was more proficient in the language than she was. She also acquired her driving learner’s permit at some point.[10] After returning to Korea, HaSeul had to stay an extra year in high school due to her time overseas, where she had struggled with her lessons in a foreign language.[11] HaSeul planned to continue with her studies and go to college to study singing.[12]

This plan changed after she was cast by BlockBerryCreative after participating in a singing contest at the recommendation of her music teacher. She passed her audition and became a trainee at the same time as YeoJin and Choerry, in late 2015 or early 2016. She and Choerry lived near each other and would commute to BlockBerry headquarters together.

2016: Reveal, solo debut

HaSeul trained under BlockBerryCreative for one year before being selected as the third member of LOONA. This came after months of worry for HaSeul, who believed she would never debut when surrounded by so many other talented trainees.[12] HaSeul had no known previous training in dance, and made mistakes during her choreography performance on selection day.[13] However, she was still chosen as the third member of LOONA, which HaSeul couldn’t believe was real, even when traveling to shoot her music video.

On December 8, 2016, the second “Who’s Next Girl?” teaser was released, and HaSeul was revealed as the third member of LOONA that same day. She released her solo single album HaSeul on December 15, 2016, and subsequently debuted as a member of LOONA.

2017: MIXNINE, LOONA 1/3, “Everyday I Love You”

In October 2017, HaSeul, along with fellow LOONA members HeeJin and HyunJin, auditioned for the survival reality show MIXNINE. Sadly, only HeeJin and HyunJin passed the audition.[14]

She was revealed to be a member of LOONA’s first sub-unit, LOONA 1/3, on February 14, 2017.

HaSeul was featured on ViVi’sEveryday I Love You”, where she covered the rap part of the song.

2018: Debut in LOONA

On August 20, HaSeul officially debuted as the leader of the completed group LOONA. She and her members released their mini-album [+ +], along with title track “Hi High”. Although HaSeul had been a lead vocalist of LOONA 1/3, she did not receive many lines or singing time on [+ +].

2019: First comeback, first hiatus

On February 19, 2019, LOONA released [X X], a repackage album of [+ +] featuring new title track “Butterfly”. On February 25, BlockBerryCreative reported that HaSeul’s grandmother had passed away, and that HaSeul would take personal time to grieve.[15] After promotions for [X X] came to an end, BlockBerryCreative officially announced a longer hiatus for HaSeul,[16] which lasted from May 10 to July 9.[17]

2020: Second hiatus

On January 7, 2020, BlockBerryCreative announced that HaSeul would be sitting out promotions of the upcoming album [#] due to mental health concerns.[18] She was said to be diagnosed with “intermittent anxiety symptoms” and would be taking time to focus on her health. Although HaSeul did not contribute to title track “So What” from [#], her voice can still be heard on three of the songs on the album, including lead single “365”.

After LOONA’s first ever music show win on March 12, 2020, HaSeul posted on social media for the first time that year, expressing her thanks to fans.

HaSeul also extended her hiatus to LOONA's third comeback [12:00] until she felt her recovery was better enough for promotions.[19][20]

On December 29, 2020 a video teaser titled "New Moon" was revealed. All the following members were shown, along with a clip of HaSeul in the teaser, as a hint for her return.

2021: Return to LOONA, [&]

In March 2021, HaSeul has been mentioned by her roommate YeoJin that she has moved back to the dorm.

On June 2, 2021, LOONA released the second photo teaser for [&], their fourth mini-album. The teasers featured the eyes of all twelve members, signaling HaSeul's comeback after a year and a half of being on hiatus. It was later confirmed after a Naver article about her return was reposted on LOONA's Twitter account. Two days later, her individual teaser for [&] was released, with hers being the first to be revealed.

On August 21, 2021, HaSeul made her return on LOONA TV on LOONA TV #745.

2022: World tour, legal disputes

On May 31, LOONA released the official announcement poster on social media regarding their first world tour called LOONA 1st World Tour: [LOONATHEWORLD]. HaSeul was entirely absent from the European leg of the tour due to a persistent shoulder injury.[21]

On November 28, all members of LOONA, except for HyunJin and ViVi, filed injunctions to suspend their exclusive contracts with BlockBerryCreative.[22]

2023: Japan concert, Instagram account, Fromm, contract termination

On January 13, HaSeul, along with YeoJin, Yves, Go Won, and Olivia Hye lost their intitial injunctions, as the court didn't find their contracts unfair enough.[23]

On March 3, 2023, the eleven remaining members of LOONA performed their first, and likely last, concert in Japan: LOONA 1st Live: LOONA THE WORLD IN TOKYO. As HaSeul's shoulder still didn't fully recover at the time, she sat out dance segments but remained on stage.

On March 30, alongside YeoJin, Yves, and Go Won, HaSeul opened her personal instagram account.[24]

On May 17, it was announced the remaining members of LOONA (including HaSeul) would be joining Fromm.[25]

On June 16, HaSeul, YeoJin, Yves, Go Won, and Olivia Hye won their lawsuits to terminate their exclusive contracts with BlockBerryCreative.[26][27]

On June 20, HaSeul officially signed with MODHAUS, joining her fellow members in the “ARTMS Strategy” project.[28]

On September 5, it was announced HaSeul will be having her first concert, titled “HaSeul 1st Small Theatre Concert 〈HaSeul Music Studio 81.8Hz〉”.

On December 1, HaSeul, alongside other ARTMS members released their first pre–debut single “The Carol 3.0”.
